This website brings together information from the Civil Service Appeal Board, a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Cabinet Office, and includes details of the role, remit and composition of the Board, details of how to appeal and the appeal process, statistics showing the workload of the Board amongst others.

Freedom of Information

With the Freedom of Information Act 2002 coming in force with effect from January 2005, the Board developed a Publication Scheme that gives access to information concerning almost every aspect of its work. Whilst some of the Board’s work has to remain confidential the Scheme and this website provide a wealth of information covering numerous topics including how to make an appeal, how the appeal process works, who the Board Members are and Annual Reports providing a yearly breakdown of the Board’s work.

Guidance notes

The Board endeavours to provide an easily accessible and user-friendly process and guidance notes have been developed for both appellants and departments that are tailored to suit the needs of each. The notes describe the appeal process from beginning to end, explain what remedies are available in unfair cases and what is expected of each party. When considering the guidance notes it is advisable to read them in conjunction with the Good Practice Principles which define the areas that the Board considers when making its decisions.

Annual reports

Each year the Board publishes an Annual Report which can be downloaded from this website. Amongst other things the reports provides a statistical breakdown of the appeals received and heard, the types of appeal received and how many were successful. A point of interest in each report is a synopsis of each case that was found unfair which provides the reasons why the Board for the appellant.
